Appu: El Poblado’s Trendsetters in Sustainable Fashion

Appu: El Poblado’s Trendsetters in Sustainable Fashion

Nestled in the heart of El Poblado lies Appu, Colombia’s first-ever market exclusive to the e-commerce of used clothing and accessories. Enter into the magical world of fashion as Appu invites you to shop sustainably for clothes, accessories, and shoes. Each year, the textile industry generates over 92 million tons of waste caused by mass production of clothing, fast fashion, and more. Stepping into Appu resembles entering a world where fast fashion ceases to exist and is instead replaced by the desire to help make the world a better place through sustainable fashion. At Appu, customers will not only enjoy a curated selection of second-hand clothing but also know that they are making an environmentally conscious decision with every purchase.

Appu is an innovative second-hand fashion platform created by three Medellín-based visionaries, actor Juan Felipe Arcila Toro, business administrator Laura Zuluaga Yabur, and systems and informatics engineer Juan Esteban Quiroz. Along with its storefront in El Poblado, the store also has a user-friendly app under the same title where customers can both buy and sell second-hand clothing. For its creators, Appu’s inspiration came from the desire to motivate and push others towards responsible fashion consumption. Understanding the environmental, social, and economic challenges that sometimes accompany the fashion world, the three visionaries wanted to develop a space that cultivated change and influenced the community around them. Through both physical and digital platforms, Appu’s co-founder, Laura Zuluaga Yabur, hopes that the store can not only promote sustainability but inspire customers to remain socially and environmentally conscious.

“Sustainability is a matter of consciousness, of being aware of what you're consuming, so that every time you take action or make a decision, you understand what lies behind it,” Yabur said.

Driven to create “fashion that cares for the planet,” Appu uses its inventive strategies to create a space where technology, social responsibility, sustainability, and fashion converge. Offering a curated collection of pieces ranging in styles from streetwear to coquette, customers can expect to be transported into a new clothes shopping experience. Creating a friendly and engaging atmosphere while maintaining a creative look and feel, Appu showcases the beauty in shopping second-hand. Changing the perception surrounding used and second-hand clothing, Appu displays a diverse range of good-quality pieces for its customers to purchase.

“So, as long as the garment is in good condition, without tears, without discoloration, its useful life can be extended, and it is welcome on any of our channels,” Yabur said.

Through the app which is available through Google Play, customers can create profiles and sell their used clothing to not only make some cash but also help the environment along the way. Users can buy top-quality brands for a quarter of the price while creating an environmental impact on their community. Whether it’s men’s shoes, kid’s jeans, or even women’s jewelry, Appu offers it all. However, for Zabur and the rest of the Appu team, it’s more than just fashion. It’s being the leaders of change and spearheading a new way of shopping sustainably. For Appu, it’s not about the transactions or commerce, instead, the store’s team finds joy in knowing that they are standing at the forefront of a new movement within the fashion industry.  Appu is more than just a store, it’s a step into a sustainable and environmentally conscious world.
